Kenya Climate Change Response StrategyKenya urgently needs a National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS) in order to put in place robust and thorough adaptation and mitigation measures to minimize risks and maximize opportunities. The Strategy is destined to inter alia, enhance Kenya’s participation in the global climate change COP15 meeting to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The aim of COP 15 is to come up with a global climate change agreement that will replace the Kyoto Protocol. This will require a comprehensive understanding of international agreements, policies and processes and importantly the positions Kenya needs to take in order to maximize beneficial effects from these, and ultimately put in place conducive and enabling framework and a concerted programme of action to combat impacts of climate change. Proper delivery of the NCCRS requires the participation of all actors – government, private sector, NGOs, religious organizations, farmers, and all vulnerable groups in the fight to combat and adapt to climate change. The Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources (MEMR) initiated the formulation of a National Climate Change Response Strategy process in May 2009. This strategy is expected to be finalized by November 2009.Objectives The overall objective of the formulation process is to develop a National Climate ChangeResponse Strategy, an Action Plan and a Resource Mobilization Plan. The NCCRS process will be participatory, involve key stakeholders and address key sectors and thematic areas. |
