PS Sunkuli chairs meeting to resolve issues on closed ngong dumpsite

One week after the national government announced the closure of Ngong dumpsite, the county government of Kajiado has agreed to secure an alternative site for waste land fill.

An eight (8) member strong committee was today formed to resolve the persistent poor solid waste management which has continuously polluted the environment causing health problems in Kajiado County.

Consequently the National Environment Management Authority was directed to design an approved landfill for Kajiado County that will be replicated to the rest of the county.

This follows persistent complains by residents of Ngong town and its environs about serious health hazards as result of pollution from illegal dumping of garbage. Environment and health experts confirmed that many residents experienced health problems related to use of contaminated water air, and food that resulted from poor management of waste.

The committee was established during a crisis meeting at the Ministry of Environment Headquarters on and chaired by the Principal Secretary of Environment Mr. Charles Sunkuli.  It was attended by Kajiado County Deputy Governor Paul Ntiati, Kajiado Senator Eng. Petyer Mositet, Environment and Health officials.

The committee will comprise the following.

  1. Governor Kajiado County
  2. Senator Kajiado County
  3. Principal Secretary Environment
  4. Principal Secretary Health
  5. Bishop Ngong Catholic Diocese
  6. Director General NEMA
  7. Kajiado north Citizens Participation Forum
  8. Environment Secretary.
  9. Regional Commissioner-Kajiado County

Its terms of reference are;

  1. The committee will be Co-chaired by the Principal Secretary Environment and the Governor of Kajiado County
  2. Develop a framework for ensuring that proper management of waste in Kajiado County under a shared objective
  1. The team will visit and identify alternative sites from the proposed alternative sites by Kajiado county Government to decommission Ngong dumpsite for better

Management of the increasing unsound and haphazard dumping of waste particularly

in Ngong sub-county.

  1. The team will also develop the estimates of cost that will be required for establishment of a landfill.
  2. The team will be responsible to foresee the process that ensure decommissioning and commissioning of the existing dumpsite and the new landfill respectively
