maangiOver 1000 delegates, representing countries that are party to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), civil societies and partners, are to congregate in Nairobi, Kenya, from 18th – 20th October for the 15th session of the Committee of Review of the Implementation of the Convention, (CRIC 15).

The Conference, that is being hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, will be  held at the United Nations Offices in Nairobi (UNON), Gigiri, and aims at combating desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in the countries affected through effective action at all levels supported by international cooperation and partnership arrangements in the framework of an integrated approach, in order to help achieve sustainable development.

The Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) is a subsidiary body of UNCCD which is tasked with tracking the implementation of the conventions by parties. CRIC15 will be a special intercessional session, which will allow Parties, through interactive sessions, to discuss key elements for a new Strategy, findings from the optional reports and future modalities for reporting.

cricThe session, that will be presided over by the Cabinet Secretary,  Prof. Judi Wakhungu, will further guide UNCCD in mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular to embrace Goal 15, which articulates the issues of protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss and sub-Target 15.3, which spells out the Land Degradation neutrality (LDN) which is at the heart of food security. CRIC 15 will also review the progress in delivering land degradation neutrality (LDN) targets for those Parties engaging in the LDN target setting exercise. Kenya is participating in a pilot project to formulate voluntary national targets and will be expected to report on the progress of LDN target setting in the country during the conference.
