The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will partner with other likeminded stakeholders in an effort to ensure the success of the cleanup and restoration of the Nairobi River and its tributaries, the Principal Secretary for State Department of Natural Resources Dr. Margaret Mwakima has said.

The PS said this during the launch of a consultative meeting on the Nairobi River Restoration Program at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi. The meeting attended by various stakeholders including Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA), National Environmental Authority (NEMA) and the County Government of Nairobi among others, whose main aim is to look for ways to combine efforts for the successful cleanup and restoration of the river to its former glory.

Dr. Mwakima stressed that there is need to map out the river and its tributaries from their water sheds to the point where it pours into the Indian Ocean for the exercise to be successful and meaningful.  She also said that there is need to learn from past experiences like what the late John Michuki had done.

Partnership among key stakeholders from women and youth is also important in bringing  economic gains through job creation, tourism, recreational parks among other activities, PS added.

Mwakima, stressed that long term programs should also incorporate afforestation of water towers and the river’s riparian grounds and its tributaries.

Also present during the event were the CS Water and Irrigation Mr. Eugene Wamalwa and Mr. Musikari Kombo who is chairman Water Services Trust Fund.
