Environment and Natural Resources Cabinet Secretary Prof. Judi Wakhungu on Saturday last week launched a program that will see partners in the environment and conservation sector plant a million bamboo trees at Ndakaini Dam, in Murang’a County.

The project, the Cabinet Secretary said, is among the efforts the government has adopted to realize the 10 percent forest cover across the country.

Prof. Wakhungu said it is vital for partners and Kenyans to invest in tree plantation in order to mitigate challenges emanating from extreme weather events associated with frequent droughts and increased incidences of land degradation and deforestation.

“All Kenyans should therefore redouble their efforts by planting trees in all available land on our farmslands, riparian reserves, office compounds, drylands, cities, urban and market centers in order to achieve our National objectives and surpass the national target of 10 percent forest cover,” she said.

The Cabinet Secretary urged partners to invest more in sustainable practices and solutions alongside planting more bamboo trees, saying they are good for the economy and energy production.

The project was organized by Bidco Africa, Kenya Forest Research Institute, African Plantation and the Young Water Professionals among others.
