This year’s World Environment Day, whose theme was “Connecting people to Nature” and its slogan “I am with Nature”, was marked at the Egerton University in Njoro, and presided over by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Prof. Judi Wakhungu.

Speaking during the occasion, the CS noted that, the World Environment Day, has since its inception, continued to be used as a platform to create awareness and educate the public on the importance of the environment and observed that, through the celebrations, her Ministry has been able to recognize best environmental practices and share lessons and experiences on sound environmental management.

Prof. Wakhungu observed that, efforts to protect our environment have scored some successes, and cited the recent gazette notice to ban the use of plastic carrier bags in the country, noting that, plastic wastes have continued to chock our drainage systems, kill livestock and degrade infrastructure, among other negative impacts.

Speaking during the same occasion, that was attended by the vice chancellor of Egerton University, Ms. Rose Mwonya, Chair of NEMA board Mr. John Konchella and the DG, NEMA, Prof. Geoffrey Wahungu among others, the Principal Secretary in the State Dept. of Environment, Mr. Charles Sunkuli noted that, the Ministry was committed in seeing effective implementation of the ban on plastic carrier bags for the best interests of our environment, people and the Country Kenya.
