PS, Environment, Mr. Charles Sunkuli, opening the the Africa Preparatory meeting the COP 13 at the Nairobi Safari Club.

The Principal Secretary in the State Department of Environment, Mr. Charles Sunkuli, has called on the African Continent to be united and articulate a very strong African voice on integration of Sustainable Development Goals, and issues relating to drought, during the 13th Conference of Parties on Desertification, to be held at Ordos International Convention and Exhibition Center in China.

Addressing delegates during the official opening of the Africa Region preparatory meeting for the 13th Conference of Parties (COP 13) at the Nairobi Safari Club, Mr. Sunkuli called on the delegates to ensure their countries have set their voluntary Land Degradation Targets (LDN), in readiness for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular goal 15 on attainment of land degradation neutral world by 20120.

Noting that COP 13 will be very critical for Africa as it is prone to frequent droughts, which have been made worse by the vagaries of  climate change, Mr. Sunkuli expressed his satisfaction that, the African group is keen to have discussions on the formulation of Drought Protocol as one of the agenda items of COP 13,  observing  that, Kenya was committed to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), as the  80per cent of the Country was classified as Arid and Semi-Arid Lands.
