SA, Mr. Kiprono presiding over the NETFUND – Africa Climate Change Fund at the Hotel Intercont.

The Principal Secretary for Environment, Charles Sunkuli today launched the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) and the African Climate Change Fund (ACCF) project.

The ACCF is part the African Development Bank (AFDB) Africa wide and global support for innovative and bankable investments while NETFUND is the main environmental fund mobilization unit under the Ministry.

In a speech read on his behalf by William Kiprono, Secretary for Administration, Sunkuli said that the Ministry welcomed the partnership as funding will be availed to develop the capacity of the inter-Ministerial Resource Mobilization Committee to enable them develop concepts and proposals that will bid for financing from the major climate financing institutions. He also noted that this partnership will bridge the funding deficit in the environment sector by ensuring that the country benefits from available climate finance streams.

He expressed satisfaction that the projects developed through this initiative will not only contribute to the country’s climate change funding needs but will also aid in the attainment of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) by significantly reducing national carbon emission.

He observed that food security had been identified by the Government as one of its key pillars and emphasized that this was an important project that has the potential to impact positively on the masses and ought to be implemented with utmost seriousness.

The event was held in Nairobi and was attended by Dr. Alice Kaudia, Environment Secretary, Walter Odero, a representative from AFDB and Dr. Brian Ptoton, a trustee of Netfund.
