Principal Secretary, Charles Sunkuli presenting a Biodiversity Atlas to the Ag. Chief Conservator of Forests Monica Kalenda during celebrations to mark the International Day for Biodiversity that was held at KFS

Principal Secretary for Environment and Forestry, Charles Sunkuli led the nation in commemorating the International Day for Diversity, 2018 that was held at the Kenya Forest Service headquarters in Karura yesterday.

Speaking during the event, Sunkuli said that as part of the country’s activities to protect and conserve biodiversity, the Ministry put in place a 90 day moratorium on logging activities in all forests in the country among other actions.

He noted that the moratorium comes to an end on Thursday 24th May this week and directed KFS to develop an advisory to be effected after the 90 days.

During the celebrations that were marked with pomp and color, the Principal Secretary also directed KFS to commence the registration of all saw millers and re register community forest associations and to help build their capacity to assist the government to conserve forests in the country.

KFS was also called upon to put a proper governance structure in place to manage all resources harvested in our forests and to leverage on ICT to streamline all forest activities.

Before he addressed the public, Sunkuli planted a ceremonial tree and toured exhibition stands by agencies under the Ministry.

The International Day for Biodiversity is commemorated annually on 22nd May. This years’ theme is “Celebrating 25 years of Action for Biodiversity’.
