Ministry of Environment Director, Programs & Projects, Agnes Yobteric viewing avocados being delivered at the Olivado EPZ Ltd for processing. After squeezing the oil from the avocados, the waste is used to generate Biogas.

Local manufacturers have been urged to consider waste recycling as a business venture in a waste-to-energy cycle with a view of having a clean environment, while generating clean energy.

Ministry of Environment and Forestry Director of Administration Henry Obino  has said that the government is grappling with waste management and uptakes of waste recycling will address the issue of dumping and waste menace.
Speaking  in Kiharu, Murang’a County during the monitory of Global Environment Facility (GEF) , funded project at Olivado EPZ Limited , Obino said that government regulations to contain waste will be put in place but they will not succeed if they are not supported by manufactures .
Mr. Obino is representing Environment PS Ms Betty Maina in monitoring projects funded by GEF, and implemented  by UNIDO .
Olivado  Biogas Africa company  , Operations Manager  Hannes Muntingh said the plant has has developed a 375 KW biogas plant using waste from avocado.
Through the GEF the firm also has put up gas cleaning and compression units .
UNIDO National Programme Officer  Linet Luvau said the project was established as part of UNIDO’s mandate to enable sustainable energy solutions and production of clean energy through a circular economy.

Officials from the Ministry of Environment led by the Director Administration, Mr. Henry Obino, with officials from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), at the Olivado EPZ Ltd in Murang’a, the firm produces clean renewable energy from avocados and pure avocado oil for export. The team is monitoring projects that are funded by the Global Env. Facility (GEF), and implemented by UNIDO.

Olivera company CEO Gary Hannam said that the company produces at least 60 tonnes of avocado waste daily which they used to dispose at ksh Ksh 25,000 per 10tonnes , the waste is now utilized in production of avocado oil and biogas .
