Environment and Forestry PS Dr. Chris Kiptoo exchange pleasantries as he receives EU Ambassador Simon Mordue , when he paid him a courtesy call.

Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo has called on the European Union to reconsider its support for environmental conservation sector, as the government explores options to balance between conservation and human rights for people living within the forests.

The PS regretted that the EU had withdrawn its support to the Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA) which plays a critical role in conservation of the country’s critical water towers.
The PS was speaking when a delegation led by EU Ambassador Simon Mordue paid him a courtesy call.
The PS pointed out challenges in implementing National Environment Authority (NEMA) laws, land degradation and forest conservation, as among other areas that require action.
On his part, Ambassador Mordue said that EU was seeking to explore other areas of cooperation and support, such as adoption of circular economy, clean energy production and waste management with the aim of leverage on the vibrant local private sector.
Mordue said EU was keen on supporting Kenya in mapping out key sector potentials, and in the ministry of Environment, solid waste management and forestry sector will be prioritized.
Through the European Green Deal, Ambassadors Mordue said the ambitious package aims at supporting  investments in green technologies, sustainable solutions and new businesses.
On the issue of support for KWTA, the EU Ambassador called on the government to explore a model that will ensure cohesion between communities living in the forest areas and conservation efforts .
