Environment and Forestry PS Dr.Chris Kiptoo has underlined the production of enough seeds as the basis of achieving the 10% tree cover.

He challenged Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) to provide enough seeds to grow seedlings that will support the countrys tree cover target by 2022.
He was speaking at the KEFRI headquarters in Muguga, Kiambu County when he made a familiarisation tour of the Institute.
The PS was received by KEFRI Director Dr. Joshua Cheboiwo and KEFRI chairman of board of directors Dr. Sammy Latema.
Dr. Kiptoo noted that the country was faced with the challenge to produce at least two billion seedlings that will enable the country to realize the 10% tree cover target  by 2022.
While meeting the Institutions senior staff,  the PS was informed that ksh. 250 million was required to raise the amount of seeds, required in the the next 3 years.

The scientists told the PS that the Institute would supplement the private sector producers of seedlings as the gigantic task was all kenyans responsibility.

They would  develop a mechanism where resources provided by the Government for seedlings  production would reach the community.  During the tour the PS visited the seeds extraction centre, among other installations.

Dr. Cheboiwo emphasized the need for all kenyans to be in involved in tree planting through mobilizing various counties to utilise respective long and short rainfall seasons .

Dr. Cheboiwo noted that KEFRI was commited to raise high quality seeds to support commercial forestry and to avoid loss of huge Investiments in the sector.

He disclosed that the Institution would establish an Innovation and Incubating centre alongside a seed bank once funds were available.
