Environment PS Dr. Chris K Kiptoo met with representatives of the Kaptagat Forest , Community Forest Associations (CFAs), at Kaptagat Forest Elgeiyo Marakwet County, to discuss on how to strengthen working relation aimed at improving forest conservation and management.

PS Dr. Kiptoo has underscored the need for CFA engagement in managing forests, saying this will bring diverse opportunities for communities within the ecosystems.
He said communities are set to benefit through ecotourism, Plantation Establishment and Livelihoods Schemes (PELIS), nature-based enterprises, beekeeping, water abstraction, mushroom farming among others and economically provide base for industrial materials for the timber industry and improving local livelihoods within the larger Kaptagat Community.
The PS indicated that the Government was looking into issues involving forest excisions, encroachments and exchanges in order to achieve lasting solutions.
The PS decried the large number of livestock grazing in the forest blocks, which he said were major cause of forest degradation, hence affecting conservation efforts.
North Rift Ecosystem Conservator Anthony Musyoka informed participants that long -term plans are underway to plant indigenous tree species to replace exotic plantations.
During the occasion WWF launched the ‘Integrated Master Plan for Restoration and Rehabilitation of Cherengany Hills, Mt Elgon and Northern Mau.’ Projects and Programs to address issues in the regions that were incorporated in the Master Plan.
The policy document has been prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in collaboration with various stakeholders.

WWF and NETFUND informed they had provided over 70,000 thousand tree seedlings between 2019 – 2020 to be planted by the CFA members.

The agreement commits KFS to enforce the protection, prescribe all the activities, CFAs to provide required manpower and the sponsor (WWF) to the requisite finances to carry out prescribed activities and engage youths to provide a livelihood.
The activities include awareness and sensitization, spot weeding, creepers cutting, beating up, periodical assessment and monitoring & reporting.
The Kaptagat Block Forest consists of three forest stations; Kaptagat, Penon and Sabor with 3,080 registered CFA members.
