The Government will establish pilot nursery projects in Kisumu county to produce seedlings for the national tree planting campaign to achieve 10 percent forest cover.

Environment PS Dr. Chris Kiptoo has said a multi agency team drawn from the national and county governments will spearhead the project which  be launched in two weeks time to help raise the seedlings for the campaign.
The PS spoke  at Mena area in Muhoroni Sub-County Kisumu County,  during the launch of the Menar seedling production Centre, he added that seedlings from the pilot nurseries will be planted in six counties in the Nyanza region which have  the lowest forest cover at 0.4 percent.
Dr. Kiptoo regretted that , infrastructural developments and raising population have led to degradation and destruction of forest land.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment in protection and reclamation of public forests and green spaces towards achieving the national strategy to achieve 10 by the year 2022.
To increase capacity for seeds and seedling production, the PS said that the Ministry has requested The National Treasury to fund six additional Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), centers across the country.
During the event Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’  Nyong’ committed that county will support the national tree planting campaign campaign by producing 40 million seedlings.
The Governor said the county was in the process of declaring six areas as public forests and 8 parks in the city will be fully rehabilitated into recreational green spaces.
He encouraged the sugar belt region with sugar cane plantations to set aside land and intercrop with trees in bid to increase the County’s forest cover.
“Every household , companies and entities should set aside land for tree planting, “ He added.
The Menara tree nursery launched today is a project of the County Government of Kisumu in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, over 200,000 seedlings have been produced in the nursery and Gorvenor Nyong’o today flagged of vehicles that will delivery the seedlings to sub-counties for planting.
