Absa Bank  has committed to plant 10 million tree seedlings  under the Bank’s flagship project dubbed “10 million trees and seedlings in five years.  The project will be undertaken in partnership with the Ministry of Environment  and Forestry towards support of the national agenda to increase the county’s forest cover to 10 percent by the year 2020.

This was revealed during the launch of Absa Bank Kenya  2020 Sustainability Commitment Report and a flagship project in support of  Sustainable Development Goal goal 15 (Life on Land).

Speaking during the launch Environment PS Dr. Chris Kiptoo commended Absa Bank for their efforts ti supporting the national tree planting campaign, saying the initiative is in line with the country’s desire to promote responsible environmental governance and the desire to accelerate the achievement of 10% tree cover.

“This links directly with the Ministry’s commitment to strengthen collaborative partnership with stakeholders, particularly the private sector” added the PS.

Dr. Kiptoo said  Ministry will collaborate with Absa Bank in implementing SDG 15 on Life on Land that seeks to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss.

ABSA Kenya Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Awouri said bank has marked several milestones among them the development of a Sustainability Strategy and Implementation Framework.

He said last year the bank became one of the Signatories of the Principles for Responsible Banking, committing to strategically align their business with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change; and also became a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact.

“We must be mindful of our environment and recognise that we have a responsibility to safeguard it not just for ourselves but for the sake of future generations” , said Awouri.

The MD said  the flagship project will be driven through collaboration with the Bank  stakeholders, including colleagues, customers and partners who will champion various fundraising activities in support of the agenda to restore 10% of forest cover by 2022.
