Environment PS Dr. Chris Kiptoo speaks during the launch of the Multi-Sectoral Committee on Sound Chemical Management, he emphasized on the need for proper chemical disposal to avoid negative environmental and human effects

Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo launched a Multi-sectoral committee on Sound Chemical Management, which aims at strengthening chemical and Waste management in the country.

The committee will be mandated to support implementation of the Kenya National Chemicals Policy by working on a systematic and coherent framework for sound chemicals management and provide overarching approach and strategies that facilitate linkages between different sectors.

Speaking today during the launch at a Nairobi hotel, PS Dr. Kiptoo said chemicals are a major part of our daily life both socially, economically and ecologically. However, these chemicals when misused, they can lead to detrimental effects on human health and environment.

He said ministry of Environment and Forestry in consultation with relevant stakeholders has developed a draft Kenya Chemicals Policy which is awaiting approval by cabinet and parliament; whose main objective is to promote sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle.

Dr. Kiptoo said that the National Environment Policy and Environment Management and coordination Act (EMCA) provides a framework for an integrated approach to planning and sustainable sound chemical management.

The committee constitutes Government ministries and agencies,players from manufacturing sector, Specialized Sectoral agencies, and learning institutions among others.

The main functions of the committee will be to, promote collaboration and partnership, promote awareness and advocacy on sound chemicals management, Promote data collection, analysis, information sharing and knowledge management to inform decision making, Promote capacity building among the chemical management stakeholders and prepare joint multi-sectoral project concepts and implementation of activities e.g. inspections and audits.

Top on the agenda will be to manage and regulate chemicals in the extractive sector and Toxic Chemicals Waste Management and Disposal.

In a speech read on behalf of Ministry of Health PS, Susan , said the committee has come at critical time in the country because of the, noteable increase in non-communicable diseases cases being managed within healthcare facilities.

PS Mochache said there is need to embrace sound chemical management across all sectors in order to avoid significant and increasingly complex risks to human health, ecosystems and substantial costs to national economies threatened by treating non-communicable diseases, such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congenital anomalies, chronic kidney disease, poisonings, among others.
