His Excellency the President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that Kenya Government has been implementing a comprehensive programme to ‘Reimagine. Recreate and Restore’ the ecosystem.

He highlighted a few measures taken by the government to implement the programme ; among them,The establishment in 2012, of the Kenya Water Towers Agency to coordinate and oversee the protection, rehabilitation, conservation and sustainable management of water towers.

Secondly, restoration of the ecosystem in Mau Forest where about 1.4 million trees have planted, Adoption of an ambitious national tree planting effort to increase forest cover to at least 10 percent by 2022, a ban on single use plastics to reduce land and ocean pollution, and Adoption of a clean energy policy.

In a statement read on his behalf by the Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko today at Garissa County, he noted that ecosystem restoration lies at the heart of our efforts to combat the three planetary crises of pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change.

“Essentially, the ecosystem is the canvas on which our lives are written. It is critical in sustaining life at all levels, from the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the natural materials we use to build our lives’ the President noted in his speech.

During the function CS Tobiko said that this year’s World Environment Day was unique because it also coincided with the launch of the United Nations decade 2021- 2030 Ecosystems Restoration.

At the same time the CS conducted a tree planting exercise at the Garissa University Memorial park to pay respect to 147 students who lost their lives during terrorist attack in 2nd April, 2015.

He directed the school management to nurture the trees in honour of the heroes and heroines, saying His Exelleny the President had also directed that the occasion be held specifically at the University in remembrance of the slain students.

Over 1000 indiginous tree seedlings were planted all donated by the National Environmental Management Authority. They gave four 10,000 litre tanks, and will also construct 100,000 litre tank to ensure that the trees were watered to maturity.

The CS was accompanied by Cheif Administrative Secretaries Mohamed Elmi (Environment and Forestry) Dr. Mercy Mwangangi (Health), Garissa Governor H.E Ali Korane, SanatorAbdikadir Haji, PS Chris Kiptoo, Lagdera MP Hon. Garane Mohamed Hire, Dr. Juliet Biao the Environment Programme Director Regional Representative for Africa among others.
