The President of the United Nations General Assembly H.E Mr. Volkan BOZKIR has said half of world’s gdp is moderately or highly dependent on nature.He said the latest science reveals that about 25% of the World assessed plant and animal species are threatened by human actions, with a million species facing extinction.

Mr. Bozkir made the remarks at Karura forest before being taken on a guided tour by the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Forestry Keriako Tobiko.The CS and the President also visited the historic Prof. Wangari Maathai corner within the Karura forest where they conducted a tree planting exercise to commemorate the visit.

Earlier, the visiting General Assembly President listened several speakers drawn forests adjacent living communities who narrated their previous experiences before the Kenya Forest Service spearheaded the forest fencing projects together with other stake holders, among them the Rhino Ark foundation.

The CS emphasized the need to give a voice to the vulnerable in society singling out men-children and marginalized groups, saying that they were the best protectors of the environment. He said that the Ministry is rolling out a greening initiative not only in Citiea but also in other municipalities in the entire country.

Also present during the activity were, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Chairman Mr. Peter Kinyua, KFS Chief Conservator of Forests Julius Kamau, and the United Nations Environmental Programmes Cordinator Mr. Cyrille Lazare Siewe among other dignitaries.
