Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko gives his remarks during the online meeting with officials from the German Embassy

 Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko Monday held discussions with officials from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany led by Deputy Ambassador Mr. Thomas Wimmer.

The meeting discussed among others establishment of the International Climate Club, ongoing cooperation in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) assist, possible support for the development of the third National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) among others.

On the establishment of Climate Club, CS Tobiko said every initiative that mobilizes global cooperation to mitigate and adapt to climate change is welcome.

The CS, however, said there is a need to engage to understand more and to enable input of Kenya and other African countries.

On the means of implementation and common but differentiated responsibilities, the CS said 1.5° is three times and a life and death issue for Africa. CS Tobiko called for special needs for Africa to be factored in where the person who pollutes more bears more responsibilities.

On possible support for the development of the third NCCAP, the CS thanked the German government for supporting the Government in the development of NCCAP 2018- 2022, the updated NDC, and the Long Term Green House Gases Emissions Strategy 2050.

The CS called for support to develop the third NCCAP 2023 – 2028 and not to wait until the other one expires. The CS said the Action Plan will implement the updated NDCs and in turn strengthen the country’s capacity for climate action.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat and Head of Environment Section,      Dr. Janina Gauder, Director Climate Change in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Dr. Pacifica Ogolla among others.
