NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

Environmental Policy and Management Component

Introduction

The Environmental Policy and Management Component will support the realization of Vision 2030 in general and, specifically, in the areas of environmental planning and governance, with the assumption that an enabling policy and regulatory framework for environmental and natural resource management, including climate change, is developed and implemented with a poverty orientation. In the First Medium-Term Plan up to 2012 the following strategies under environmental planning and governance will be supported:
•    Upgrade the capacity of institutions for enhanced environmental data and information coverage and application;
•    Develop a policy framework to harmonize environmental-related laws and institutions, and promote the capacity for collective enforcement of environmental standards;
•    Strengthen institutional capacities of multi-sectoral planning and strengthen linkages between institutions of planning and environmental management;
•    Establish a baseline on the state of the environment for future environmental planning; and
•    Strengthen negotiating capabilities through top talent development and compliance with Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs).

World Environment Day 2010

The World Environment Day is usually marked on June 5 each year all over the world.

In Kenya it will be observed in all provinces with the highlight being at  Turi Sulgwita primary school in Molo district of Rift  Valley Province where Environment and Mineral Resources Minister Hon. John N. Michuki ,EGH, MP will preside.

The success of humanity depends    on how we care and  conserve the environment as ecosystems are very important  in ensuring human survival.
The global theme for this year's celebration is "Many Species, One Planet,One Future". This theme ties in with this year's World Biodiversity one. The United Nations proclaimed 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity, and people all over the world are working to safeguard this irreplaceable natural wealth and reduce biodiversity loss.
 As Kenya prepares to celebrate the World Environment Day 2010, we give cognizance to our country's biodiversity
 The theme has been domesticated for Kenya "Biodiversity: connecting with nature".
As  Our country is endowed with a wide range of rich biological resources with over 35,000 known and documented species.  This rich biodiversity supports livelihoods and enhances the economic development of our nation. This, therefore, is an opportunity for everyone to not only reflect on the life-link with biodiversity but especially encourage communities to embrace and preserve the diversity of life, which  provides them with  food, fuel, medicine and other essentials for current and future human wellbeing.

International Year for Biodiversity.

Background

The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year for Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and its value to humankind. People all over the world are expected to take action in 2010 to safeguard all forms of life on earth.

Human beings rely on diversity for food, fuel, medicine and other essentials. Regrettably it is being lost at a greatly accelerated rate because of human activities. This impoverishes human beings and weakens the ability of the ecosystems, on which we depend, to resist growing threats such as climate change
