There is need to modernize Meteorological equipment in the Country to enable delivery of better services, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Chris Kiptoo has said.

Dr. Kiptoo observed that, Kenya Meteorological Department provided critical weather services to the African regional and should therefore install modern equipment to match the rapidly changing world technology.

The Principal Secretary was speaking when he toured the Kenya Meteorological Department in Nairobi and the Regional World Meteorological Organization (WMO) offices housed in the same premises.

The PS who was conducted on the tour by the Director, Kenya Meteorological Services, Stella Aura, also made a courtesy call on Mark Majodina, the WMO representative for Eastern & Southern Africa.

Dr. Kiptoo noted that, it was critical to attend to the Meteorological departments declining staffing levels against the Institutions increased workload.

During the tour, the PS familiarized himself with the Flood forecasting and diagnostic laboratory, the Regional Telecommunications Hub, the Observatory and Automatic Weather Station alongside Radiosode/Ozonesonde, that measures wind speed, direction, pressure among other atmospheric aspects.
