Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko today met a team from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to discuss the UNDP Portfolio of Projects in the ministry.

The team was led by  Mr. Walid Badawi , the Resident Representative-UNDP  Kenya . He was accompanied his Deputy Ms Mandisa Mashologu and other Senior UNDP Programme Officers, Everlyne Koech , Geoffrey Omedo and Dr. Harun Warui.
The CS highlighted the ministry’s priorities areas as environmental conservation, protection of vital water towers and wetlands , waste management, pollution control and increasing the country’s forest cover to 10% by 2022.
CS Tobiko also underscored the importance of the environment as the bedrock of the Big 4 Agenda and other development programs  but noted that there was a gap in financing of environmental projects.
He hailed the partnership between the Government of Kenya and UNDP and urged for more support to the counties for carry out environmental devolved functions. He emphasized that policies should translate into concrete programs, which directly impact local communities.
On his part UNDP-Resident Representative Walid Badawi  said UNDP has mobilized over US 30Million  to undertake projects in the environment sector.
Walidi said there is need to accelerate resource mobilization to help the country to achieve its Nationality Determined Contributions .
CS Tobiko was also informed about the upcoming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), Implementation Acceleration Project, which will succeed the Low Emission Climate Resilient Development project, which is coming to an end.
Also in attendance at the meeting were Secretary of Administration in the Ministry Mr Joel Kitili and senior technical officers from the ministry.
