003Kenya is on track to submit its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) which aim at providing priority framework for adaptation and mitigation measures for the period of 2020 to 2030.
Environment and Forestry Chief Administrative Secretary Hon. Mohammed Elmi has said the updates NDC has been informed by a more detailed and robust assessment of mitigation and adaptation measures, in-depth analysis , improved information and data and an extensive stakeholder consultation process.
Speaking at a Naivasha Hotel during a workshop for Parliamentary Committee on Environment to Review Kenya’s updated NDC, Hon Elmi said the Ministry will engage law makers and other decision makers on issues of Climate Change, in order to enable implementation of actions.
He said issues of climate change are cross cutting and they affect all sectors , and called for concerted efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.
He said most counties have already passed their climate change action plans , with two percent of their development budgets dedicated to climate change programs.
004Acting Director, Climate Change Directorate Dr. Pacifica Ogolla said Kenyas’ NDCs are being implemented through the National Climate Change Action Plan under seven priority areas: disaster risk management, food and nutrition security, water and the blue economy, forestry, wildlife and tourism, health-sanitation and human settlements.
She said that the session was meant to collect views from members of parliament, before final submission to the cabinet.
Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Hon. Chachu Ganya called for more collaborative engage and exuded confidence that Parliament will offer support for the country to achieve the NDCs.
Hon Ganya said operationalization of the action plan will offer a good opportunity for the country to come up with mitigation and adaption measures to curb vagaries of climate change.
Present during the meeting were Honorable Members of Parliament,Charity Kathambi Chepkwony, Nasri Sahal, Rehema Hassan ,Chachu Ganya, Hassan Hulufo, technical officers drawn from the Climate Change Directorate among others .
The updated NDC is in accordance with article 3 and 4 of the Paris Agreement and they build on Kenya’s initial NDC.
NDCs efforts  are developed by countries to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change to deliver the Paris Agreement — keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5°C.
