Environment CS Keriako Tobiko has urged residents of Kajiado County to scale up tree planting in the area to improve their livelihoods and increase the Countys’ forest cover.

Speaking  during the national celebrations to mark the International Day of Biological Diversity in Kajiado, the CS commended Kiajiado County Commisoner Joshua Nkanatha, for cracking down on illegal charcoal burning and logging.
The CS said the Ministry of Environment is at the core of ensuring landscape restoration,  implementation of adaptation and mitigation measures to curb climate change among other environmental protection and conservation measures.
The event was held at Ilekulnyeti Primary School in Nasaru Olosho Natural Conservancy.
The CS commended the Conservancy for its conservation efforts saying it is a true demonstration on how local communities and traditional knowledge combine in modern participatory conservation.
During the event , the Kenya Forest Services (KFS), gave 10,000 seedlings and Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) 1500 seedlings – all to be distributed and planted in schools within the nature conservancy, in support of the ongoing national campaign to increase the country’s tree cover to 10 percent by 2022.
To enhance and compliment the Conservancys’ efforts in conservation, the Ministry of Environment and it’s Semi Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs), -National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), KEFRI , KFS, Kenya Water Towers Agency  and NETFUND, pledged to donate  a total of 450 additional beehives, Water boozers – two strips , to support the Nasaru Nature Conservancy and 170 pieces of balls for 34 schools in the Conservancy .

During the function assorted items were donated by Ministry from its different agencies to the local schools among them sanitary pads , books, face masks, branded dustbins, among others.

Kajiado County Commissioner  Nkanatha, directed  administration officers to continue enforcing the charcoal ban and urged locals to compliment government efforts in tree planting in order to achieve the  10 percent required national threshold.
This year’s celebrations theme is “Our Solutions are in Nature” with the slogan “We’re part of the Solution”. The celebration forms part of a worldwide platform for creating public awareness and outreach on key biodiversity issues.
