Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has called for a paradigm shift in the implementation of Government projects. “Make the project different by doing the following; make it community owned and driven for sustainability and impact, set SMART goals from the onset”, CS Tobiko emphasized.

The CS said communities knows their immediate priorities and they have solutions they only need technical support and incentives from County and National Government’s. The CS decried the amount of time wasted in preparatory meetings and workshops urging International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN) the implementing agency for the project to focus on Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant and Time bound (SMART) goals.

CS Tobiko spoke today at Michuki Memorial Park during the briefing on the strengthening forest management for improved biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in the southern rangelands of Kenya-GEF 7 Drylands Programme. The four-year project which will be financed by Global Environment Facility (GEF) at 6 million USD and Co financing of 13 million USD will be implemented by IUCN in Kajiado and Narok counties. The program which will be executed by NEMA will address biodiversity loss, land degradation, climate change and Sustainable Forestry Management (SFM).

The CS was briefed by IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Programme Coordinator Charles Oluchina and Kaori Yasuda – Acting Kenya Country Rep. The briefing was attended by NEMA DG Mamo Mamo, KWTA Ag DG Prof Julius Tonui, NECC Secretary Dr John Chumo, NETFUND CEO Samson Toniok, KEFRI Deputy Director Dr Jane Njuguna, Heads of Departments in the Ministry among others.
