Environment Secretary, Dr. Alice Kaudia addressing the members of the Kenya Youth Climate Change Alliance in her office.

The youth are the back bone of the nation and can change the future of the society with their well-being and courageous behavior, as they constitute the majority of the population in many countries, and have an increasingly strong social and environmental awareness, that  has the power to transform our societies towards a low-carbon and climate resilient future.

Speaking when she received a delegation from the Kenya Youth Climate Change Alliance in her office, the Environment Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Alice Kaudia observed that, engaging the youth in environmental protection not only creates a direct impact on changing their behaviour and attitude, but also influences their parents, relatives and families.  She  informed the group that, the Ministry recognized the key role that the youth play in tackling climate change and will continue working closely with youth-led and youth-focused organizations around the Country  to empower them to take adaptation  and mitigation actions and enhance their effective participation in climate change policy decision making processes.

The Environment Secretary noted that, human activities such as the use of fossil fuels, deforestation and unsustainable agriculture contribute to climate change, which decreases the availability of nutritious food and clean water, destroys ecosystems leading to malnutrition and ill health thus rendering the youth vulnerable. She thus, reminded the youth that, they can play an active role in protecting and improving the environment by changing their lifestyles and how it affects the environment, making their homes, schools and youth organizations more environmentally friendly by adopting environmentally friendly practices and recycling of different materials, as well as preserving resources such as water and electricity.
